A proper Yorkshire village pub where Sunday lunch is the main event — roast beef with a Yorkshire pudding people describe as whopping, plenty of gravy, and sides of bubbling cauliflower cheese and tangy braised red cabbage that arrive as a nice surprise. Portions are generous enough that nobody's had room for pudding. The pies are the other draw: proper shortcrust, top, sides and base, packed with slow-braised beef or lamb, though ask for extra gravy. There's a kids' menu, high chairs, buggy access and free parking, plus outdoor seating for warmer days, and dogs are welcome after a walk in the nearby country park. Service is informal and unhurried — nothing's too much trouble. Two things to know: book ahead, especially at weekends, and a 10% service charge is added to tables of two or more.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
