Tucked down a ginnel off Stramongate, this 16th-century café and bistro is a bit of a find — low ceilings, a wood burner and an open wooden staircase up to a second dining room, all family run. It's small, so book if you can; walk-ins are taken when there's room, and a pram is easier managed on the sheltered outdoor terrace, where the kids' menu and high chairs also come in handy. Cooking is local, fresh and unfussy: chicken, leek and mushroom pie, baked haddock with a herb crust, fish and chips, homemade soup, a properly big cooked breakfast, and scones with clotted cream and outstanding raspberry jam. Service is pleasant and quick without hovering, gluten-free requests are taken seriously, and one parent calls it a "hidden gem" — good value for what arrives.
