Set just two minutes from Waverley station, this is a Victorian pub that genuinely stops people in their tracks — ornate ceilings, thistle wallpaper, a mezzanine balcony over the bar. The important thing for families: book a table upstairs. Downstairs gets properly packed, often standing room only, and hard to find a seat, but upstairs you're part of the buzz while still able to hear each other across the table. There's a kids' menu and high chairs, and the staff are friendly and unhurried — happy to explain the guest ales and let you taste before you choose. The Cullen skink comes up again and again, and the haddock and chips is crisp rather than greasy. Portions are good value for the money. Not one for prams at ground level on a busy afternoon.
