A proper Mutley Plain boozer first and foremost — more CAMRA awards than they have wall space for, and a cask ale range regulars call "phenomenal" — which makes it an early-afternoon proposition with children rather than an evening one. There's a kids' menu, high chairs and outdoor seating if you'd rather sit away from the thick of it, and the staff come in for constant praise: friendly, patient, happy to let you sample a beer before committing, and genuinely accommodating when people book the place out for parties. Be realistic about timing, though. Saturday nights are buzzing and very busy, sometimes with fewer staff on than the crowd warrants, and there's live acoustic music in the main bar plus a Sunday quiz in the basement. Drinks run a little pricey, though not much more than anywhere else now.
