Turning up on a Friday night without booking and still getting squeezed in tells you something about how this place runs — and the kitchen doesn't treat children as an afterthought. There's a proper kids' menu that has satisfied some famously fussy eaters, fish fingers arriving piping hot alongside the grown-up plates, and the fish of the day and pork belly both get raved about. High chairs are on hand, the staff are patient and genuinely helpful, and the garden is a real one: a big beer garden that comes into its own in summer, with plenty of room for children to be children. Free parking and easy buggy access take the faff out of arriving. It's dog-friendly too. The restaurant is newly refurbished and gets busy, so book ahead at weekends if you can — one family found the atmosphere cosy but lively.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
