Sitting on a little hill outside Reading, this country pub trades on views over the fields — and a terrace that's genuinely pleasant to sit on while children fidget. Inside is bright and full of natural daylight, spotless, with cosy corners the staff will find you even if you turn up unbooked on a Sunday. The food is the draw: roasts with generous portions, sausages and mash that arrives with a huge jug of dark onion gravy, plus fish and vegetarian and vegan choices. Food comes out quickly, which matters when someone's flagging. High chairs, a kids' menu and buggy access are all in place, and the team are warm rather than merely polite. The snag: parking is free but there isn't much of it, so arrive early or expect a walk.
