About The Dragon

A proper traditional boozer just off the bustle of the market square, spread over three levels — which does mean stairs, so a pram takes some manoeuvring. It's drinks-led rather than a meal out: food is cobs and rolls behind the bar, though there's a kids' menu and high chairs if you need them. The real draw for families is outside — a beer garden at the back plus an upstairs outdoor seating area that regulars reckon makes the place. Staff are friendly and unhurried, the cask ales are well kept, and a pint runs around £6. Come in the daytime: from about 8pm a DJ spins vinyl and weekends turn loud and firmly grown-up. There's also a hireable room upstairs with a full Scalextric track, worth asking about if you've got older children in tow.
