Grand and glassy in the middle of Edinburgh, this is a treat-yourself sort of place rather than a chaotic weekday lunch, but families are properly looked after — kids' menu, high chairs, easy buggy access and vegan and dairy-free dishes if you ask. The vegetarian breakfast gets extraordinary praise, and the potato hash with crispy bacon and a fried egg is a favourite too, though portions can be on the small side. Potato and leek soup, pork belly and the sticky toffee pudding all come in for repeated raves. Service is warm and attentive once you're seated, and the atmosphere is generally calm, though the tables near the service station are noisy — worth mentioning when you book. Book ahead, especially at Christmas, when the decorations alone are worth the trip.
