Just off the main square, this is the kind of stop that works when everyone needs feeding at once — service is quick and efficient, the staff are friendly and used to making space, and there's plenty of parking nearby so you're not circling Kelso with a car full of tired children. Scones come in every variety going, cheese and fruit among them, and the daily boards run to soup, toasties, croque monsieur and warm mackerel salad, all reasonably priced. The Samal dhal soup is veggie and vegan and genuinely good; the iced tiramisu latte gets rave notices. Outside tables are lovely for people-watching. High chairs, a kids' menu and buggy access are all sorted, though the entrance is narrow — one wheelchair user found getting in tricky. Dogs are welcome too, with their own menu.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
