Tucked beside the Penrose water gardens, this is the kind of café where you can let a toddler off the hook while you wait for food — there's a toy corner inside and a small play area outside, and children get proper child-sized cutlery without being asked. The setting does a lot of the work: tables overlooking the waterlilies, deer sometimes visible in the field through the windows, and the whole free-to-enter garden to walk off lunch in afterwards. Breakfast is the strength — eggs Benedict and eggs Florentine come in for real praise, and the cake counter runs to Kinder Bueno brownies and Malteser tiffin. Coffee and the tea list are both taken seriously. Roomy, dog friendly, with a decent car park. Skip the pancakes, which land flat rather than fluffy, and the vegan sausages are the old-fashioned kind.
