Set around fishing lakes on the edge of Derby, this is the kind of local that works year-round with children in tow — a roaring fire in winter, a big garden with water views in summer, and free parking so you're not circling. The carvery is the draw: plenty of meats, heaps of vegetables, and roast potatoes people single out as fabulous, with the beef and nut roast both praised. Service is quick and genuinely accommodating — staff have been known to find a quieter table when a room gets loud and spare older or slower guests the carvery queue. Two honest snags: the dining room is downstairs and the building runs over several levels, so book a downstairs table if you've a pram; and the menu beyond the carvery is thin.
