Tucked at the lower end of town near the Obelisk, this place doesn't look like much from the street — then it opens right out into a garden at the back, part of it covered, so you get shade in summer and somewhere for children to be a bit noisy without anyone minding. High chairs and a kids' menu are there, and the outdoor tables give a pram somewhere to sit. Food comes out fast, which matters when someone's hungry and cross: the homemade soup with a cheese toastie lands within minutes for around £8. The pepper sausage roll with salad, coleslaw and chutney gets particular praise, and so does the coffee. Cakes are more gateau than tray-bake, roughly £3. The front room is small and cosy rather than roomy — head straight for the garden. Staff are friendly and quick, and one visitor found it "totally unrushed".
