Come hungry — portions here are the sort that defeat grown adults, and the steak pie gets named again and again, packed so full of beef that people mention it years later. It's an old country pub, small and cosy rather than sprawling, with a woodburner, fresh flowers and candles on the tables, and a snug round the corner from the small bar that seats about five comfortably. There's buggy access and free parking, high chairs and a kids' menu, and — the real winner with small children — resident donkeys in the field beside the car park. Staff are consistently warm with families; one visitor found the welcome as good as "the woodburning stove". Sunday roasts and set menus are a strength. Worth booking: it's genuinely compact, and a quiz runs fortnightly, so evenings can get busy.
