A proper old coaching inn set back from the A697, this is an easy stop for families — parking is free and plentiful, so nobody's circling with a tired toddler in the back. Inside there's real character: a large log burner in the middle of the bar area, window tables worth asking for, and enough room to get a pram through. Staff are consistently friendly and helpful, and the food is generous rather than fiddly — the suet crust steak pie gets particular praise, as does the chicken and leek pie with roast vegetables. There's a kids' menu, high chairs, vegan options and outdoor seating when the weather plays along. It's about half an hour from Lindisfarne, so it works well after Holy Island. Worth knowing: it gets busy, and prices are reasonable but not bargain-basement.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
