Tucked into a stone-walled dining room in a quiet corner of Denbighshire, this is a husband-and-wife operation where the welcome starts at the door and often ends with a half-hour chat over the last of your wine. Chunky walls, solid wooden tables and old photographs of the place give it a warm, old-fashioned feel that children tend to settle into rather than fidget through. High chairs, a kids' menu and buggy access are all sorted, there's outdoor seating in good weather, and free parking means no circling with a car seat in one arm. The cooking is the real draw — homemade bread, brie and strawberry parcels, rack of lamb that falls off the bone, plum and apple crumble. It's an intimate room and Sunday lunch fills up, so book ahead; one family happily drove two hours for it.
