Tucked away from the seafront crowds, this is a proper old Brighton pub — creaky character, tin boxes screwed to the walls with messages left by past visitors, which will occupy a bored child for a good ten minutes. It's genuinely tight inside, so bring the buggy in early or aim for one of the outdoor tables; by half twelve on a weekend it's packed and loud enough that you'll be leaning in to hear the staff. Book if you're coming with children. The food is the draw: homemade pies with proper pastry, mash and greens, fish and chips people rate above anywhere else in town, roasts, and daily seafood specials chalked above the bar. Kids' menu and high chairs are there, portions are generous, prices fair. Dogs welcome too. One parent simply calls it "pub food of dreams".
