Tucked into the village with the Pentland Hills and the Water of Leith walk on the doorstep, this is a proper local that happens to work beautifully with children in tow. The back garden is the draw — tables, cosy cabins and a little playground, so you can eat while they burn off the walk. Sunday roast is the thing people travel for: beef slow-cooked for eight hours, good potatoes, proper gravy and Yorkshire puddings. Gluten-free needs are handled carefully, and staff are generous with time — one family arriving mid-afternoon between service were fed anyway. High chairs, a kids' menu, buggy access and free parking all confirmed. Two honest notes: the rear annex is far less charming than the bar area, so ask where you'll be sat, and outdoor tables can be QR-code ordering only.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
