Perched above the South Downs with proper views from the dining room, this is a smarter sort of lunch out, but one that works with children in tow — high chairs, a kids' menu, buggy access and free parking, so you're not wrestling anything up a gravel drive. The small plates are imaginative and, importantly, generous; the pork croquettes, crispy oyster mushrooms and the Tottington sharing board come up again and again, and puddings are properly homemade. Staff are attentive in a genuinely thoughtful way — one hot Saturday they'd put fans out around the room before anyone asked. The outdoor terrace is small but quiet, lovely on a warm day. It's a restaurant rather than a rowdy family pub, so book ahead, expect a leisurely pace, and save the tasting menu evenings for a night without the children.
