About STACK Newcastle

A converted derelict building on Pilgrim Street turned into a huge open food-and-drink hall, with a stage in the middle and balconies upstairs where you can look down over the whole thing — small children tend to be transfixed by the live bands, which are free and on most days. Plenty of room to park a pram, high chairs, a kids' menu, and enough space between the food outlets that nobody minds a toddler wandering. Order at whichever counter you fancy; the toasties at the melt place get particular praise. Two honest snags: it's not cheap (around £10 for a burger, close to £7 a pint), and evenings bring long bar queues and a proper buzzing crowd, so lunchtime or early afternoon is the calmer bet with children. Dogs welcome too. One regular calls it "a great idea" for a rainy day out.
