A steep little climb up Cockburn Street rewards you with two floors of proper café — enough room that a pram isn't a crisis, plus tables outside if your lot need the fresh air. The full Scottish breakfast is the thing here, huge enough that two children can happily share one plate, and the blueberry pancakes come out properly done. Scones arrive with clotted cream, which is rarer in Edinburgh than it should be. There's a kids' menu, high chairs, vegan choices and a cake counter that has settled many a wobble — the apple caramel crumble gets the loudest praise, though some of the sponges can be dry. Staff stay genuinely warm even when it's heaving, and it does heave. It's a touch pricey for a café, and the ladies' toilets could do with some love.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
