A pit stop after a windy walk at Cart Gap beach, this is the kind of place families end up planning their day around. Breakfast, jacket potatoes, cod and chips, ham egg and chips — all cooked fresh, and priced sensibly for what arrives. The cakes are the real draw: a big choice, and the Victoria sponge with a small jug of pouring cream for a little extra gets talked about a lot. Mr Whippy too, which usually settles any argument. Plenty of outdoor tables, buggy access, high chairs, a kids' menu and a free car park with overflow for busy days. The staff are consistently warm and helpful, which matters when you arrive with sandy children in tow. Two snags worth knowing: it's genuinely busy most of the time, and dogs are outside only. Check opening times before you set off.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
