Bristol's oldest pub sits in the Docks, and it wears its age well — historical pictures on the walls, a roaring fire in winter, and a proper buzz that stops short of overwhelming, so a chatty toddler won't stand out. Sunday roasts, the pie and fish and chips all get raved about, portions are hearty rather than fussy, and food arrives quickly even at Sunday lunchtime, which matters when someone's melting down. Staff are warm without being stiff — one visitor found them "genuinely friendly, not in that forced, overly polite way" — and nobody rushes you. There's a kids' menu, high chairs and outdoor seating. Two honest snags: it's small, so getting a table at peak times can be a scramble, and the upstairs seating is up steep stairs and isn't always open. Worth booking if you're a group.
