About Pop Up Wok HQ 爆大鑊

A tiny Hong Kong café tucked into Newcastle, run by a couple who clearly care — the staff chat, recommend spots around the city, and keep things moving fast when someone's in a hurry. It's small and a bit worn around the edges, but that works in its favour with children: informal, cosy, and there's a basket of board games (Connect 4 among them) to get through the wait, which is worth a lot with a restless four-year-old. You can watch the food being cooked. The handwritten menu booklet is illustrated and annotated, so children can point at pictures. High chairs, buggy access, a kids' menu and vegan options are all there. Go for the deep-fried tofu, the crunchy chicken fillet, satay beef noodles and the Japanese-style cake. Portions near the front of the menu run pricey — the cheaper gems sit at the back.
