Worth knowing upfront: this is a tasting-menu place out in the Northumberland countryside, so it's an evening out rather than a casual family lunch — but there's free parking right there, buggy access, high chairs and a children's menu if you're bringing older kids who'll sit through something long. The dining room is small and the kitchen is on full view, which children find genuinely gripping. Fifteen courses, built from local produce, foraged bits and home-grown herbs — beetroot dehydrated and rehydrated into something almost jelly-like, apples slow-cooked for three months, monkfish with scallop roe and horseradish. The team bring the courses out themselves and explain them warmly without any stiffness. There are soft and mixed drink pairings alongside the wine, which is a rare kindness if you're driving. Book well ahead, and expect to spend properly.
