Down a steep flight of stairs in the middle of Cardiff sits a basement dining room that hasn't changed much in fifteen years, and that's rather the point. The stairs are worth knowing about if you've got a pram, but once you're down there it's surprisingly roomy. It runs like a school canteen — take a tray, choose from the warm counters or order — which helps enormously when someone is past waiting. Portions are generous, prices are genuinely low, and there's a kids' menu and high chairs. The steak and kidney pie, cottage pie and jacket potatoes get the most affection, with cheesecake after. One regular says it feels "like eating at home". Service can unravel when it's packed, with numbers called out and meals arriving apart, so go off-peak if you can.
