Pies with proper personality, and cheap enough that a family meal here won't sting. The room is small but characterful, with buggy access and high chairs, and a games console at one of the tables — children happily played Donkey Kong while waiting, which buys you a peaceful ten minutes. Service is quick and the staff genuinely kind. There's a kids' menu, and the food is homemade: the beef and Stilton with cheesy mash and onion gravy gets rave notices, the pastry properly flaky, the mash smooth. Vegan and gluten-free eaters are unusually well looked after — most of the menu is GF, and the Notdog pie with mushy peas and vegan gravy is a genuine dish, not an afterthought. A few outside tables too. It's tiny, so a big group needs booking, and portions are heavy going.
