Tucked inside the castle grounds, this is the sort of stop that rescues a family walk — big views, plenty of outdoor tables, and free parking on site. Buggies get in without a fight, high chairs are there, and there's a kids' menu, though the roomy outdoor seating is the easier bet with a pram on a busy day. Order at the counter, take a number, and food comes to you, which helps when someone's hungry and loud. Portions are generous enough that takeaway boxes get asked for; the pasties, fish and chips, jacket potatoes and cream teas all get praise, as does the chocolate brownie. Staff are unbothered by a child changing their mind about ice cream. Sandwiches can be hit and miss, and you'll need castle entry to eat here.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
