Perched right on the water at Newhaven, this is one of those places where the view does half the work — a wall of sea outside the window, and a cosy, tastefully done room behind you. It gets genuinely busy, so book if you want a table inside; the outdoor seating is a decent fallback on a fair day and easier with a pram. Staff are notably patient — they'll squeeze people in without a booking and shuffle tables when they can, which matters when you're arriving with children in tow. Fish and chips and the ribs get the loudest praise, portions are generous for ££, and the sticky toffee pudding has a following. High chairs, a kids' menu, vegan options and free parking all help. Dogs are welcome, so it can get noisy.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
