Queues of 30 minutes or more are normal, and at peak times families have waited far longer, so aim for just before noon or an off-hour, and bring something to occupy small hands. Once you're in, it's homey and generous: Shanghai xiao long bao, fried pork dumplings, juicy steamed buns, beef noodles with a broth people talk about for weeks. Portions are huge and prices genuinely low. There are high chairs and a kids' menu, though space is tight for prams. Cash only — the nearest machine is the Co-op.
