Set behind the gates of a country hall near Penrith, this is a proper occasion lunch rather than a quick refuel — you drive up past grounds where white peacocks (one regular visitor to the tables is a bird called Percy) and black swans wander, which buys you a good ten minutes of children's attention before anyone even sits down. The Orangery dining room is roomy and relaxed with mismatched furniture, so a pram isn't a problem, and there's outdoor seating and free parking. Staff are warm and accommodating without hovering. Food is seasonal and locally sourced — the brisket burger, venison and butternut squash curry all get praise, and portions are generous enough that the smaller sizes are worth asking about. High chairs and a kids' menu are in place. It's tucked away and easy to miss: head past the hall towards the stables.
