Set inside a Michelin-starred country house on the Exe estuary, this is a special-occasion lunch rather than an everyday one — worth knowing before you book. The view over the water is genuinely the thing people remember, and there's a garden you can walk in and take tea, which helps enormously when children need to move between courses. There's a kids' menu, high chairs, buggy access and free parking, and the rooms are calm and quiet rather than cramped. The bread and butter come in for real praise, as do the steak, the Torbay sole and a banana soufflé one diner still talks about. The scones with afternoon tea are a cheaper, easier way in with little ones. Service is warm if occasionally a touch disorganised, and a set menu for two can run near £180 — book ahead.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
