Booking is the first thing to know here — Friday nights fill up and walk-ins get turned away, so ring ahead rather than turning up hopeful with tired children. It's a proper bistro rather than a big open room, with tables close together, so a folded pram is easier than a full-size one. High chairs are there, there's a kids' menu, and free parking takes one worry out of an Ambleside evening. The team are used to being asked for spoons, small plates and a plastic cup for a little one, and they don't make a fuss about it. The lasagne comes up again and again, as does the slow-cooked lamb, and portions are generous enough that children can share. Food arrives quickly once you're seated.
