The Nine Giants
Warm, relaxed Cardiff pub with excellent-value steaks, a lovely summer garden and kids' menu — tired decor and occasional slow service aside.

Tucked away in Rhiwbina, this is a small, laid-back Italian where the cooking can be genuinely lovely — fresh pasta, sweet melty aubergines in the pasta Norma, garlic tiger prawns one visitor swore were "the size of lobsters", and a tiramisu people rate above anything else in Cardiff. Free parking helps enormously with a car full of kids, and there's a kids' menu, high chairs, buggy access and vegan choices. The room is relaxed rather than fancy, with music on and staff who are warm and chatty. Be honest with yourself about timing, though: on nights when they're short-staffed, food can take a very long time to arrive, and one parent described starters running an hour late. Midweek it's quieter, closer to a café than a cosy restaurant — which suits an early tea with children.
