Tucked just off the Royal Mile in front of Parliament Square, this is a genuinely calm place to land after a morning at the castle — simple, comfortable interiors and enough quiet to actually hear each other. The team are patient explainers, good at steering children (and first-timers) through a Scottish menu. Upstairs is noticeably quieter than downstairs if you've got a wobbly toddler, and there are high chairs, a kids' menu, vegan options and buggy access. The ox cheek pie is the one for children — tender, with a crust that's crisp rather than tough — and the cullen skink, breadcrumbed haggis croquette with mango salsa, and crisp-battered fish and chips all earn their praise. Two honest notes: outdoor tables are almost impossible to get in such a prime spot, and it's not a cheap-and-cheerful lunch. Book ahead.
