Small-town Staffordshire hides a genuinely accomplished kitchen here, and the good news for families is that the warmth matches the cooking. Buggy access, high chairs and a kids' menu are all in place, there's free parking, and the back courtyard gives you somewhere to let children stretch their legs over drinks while the grown-ups finish. Plates that come in for particular praise include whipped goat's cheese on focaccia crostini, lamb shoulder over parmesan risotto, cod with pomme dauphinoise and a rhubarb crème brûlée that catches people out in the nicest way. Service is attentive without hovering — the owners talk you through the menu and happily adapt when it changes. It's an intimate room and quite refined, so book ahead, expect a proper sit-down meal rather than a quick one, and vegan options are available.
