There's a proper farm-shop café feel here, and it earns the queue that often builds at lunchtime — the team turn tables over quickly, and larger groups do get seated. Portions are generous: the macaroni cheese (there's a smaller kids' version), the salmon quiche, cheese platters, homely pies and a BLT with really good bacon all come recommended, and the cake counter is enormous, with scones one visitor rated the finest of their whole week. Breads and chutneys are made on site. High chairs, buggy access, a kids' menu, vegan choices and free parking make the logistics easy, plus outdoor seating on a fine day. Two honest snags: it's not cheap — the cooked breakfast in particular divides people — and service can feel brisk when the room is full.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
