Down on the sea wall, a short walk from the castle, this is a proper traditional Yorkshire chippy with a small cafe area attached — and "small" is the word, so if you want a table rather than a takeaway box, arrive early or be ready to queue. Don't let the queue put you off: orders come out in about ten minutes, which matters when a toddler has hit the wall. The haddock is the thing — fresh, flaky, in a light batter that isn't greasy — with generous chips, mushy peas and thick, meaty gravy, all at prices that won't sting. High chairs, a kids' menu and buggy access are all sorted, and the staff are consistently warm; one parent describes being made to feel "a valued customer". Grab a bench by the harbour if it's full.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
