A Lichfield spot that's more special-occasion than everyday, but works with children in tow — there's a kids' menu, high chairs and room to get a buggy in, plus vegan options. Food is the reason to come: the beef bourguignon gets singled out again and again for being tender and properly presented, the risotto and steak and ale pie both have devotees, and portions are filling rather than fussy. Butternut squash soup, roast vegetables and parmesan fries all come recommended, and the set menu is genuinely good value. Staff are warm — birthday cards and candles appear unprompted. Two honest notes: it's noisy when full, so ask to sit downstairs if you want calm, and the odd dish misses. Worth booking.
