Restaurant · Edinburgh
A proper Old Town chippy near the Royal Mile, this is the sort of place that works when everyone is tired and hungry and nobody can face another decision. Buggy access, high chairs and a kids' menu are all sorted, and the layout is roomy enough that a pram isn't a problem. Portions are enormous — the battered haddock comes crisp outside, juicy inside, with hand-cut chips fried in beef dripping, and grown-ups can order mac and cheese, haggis spring rolls or Irn-Bru chicken wings alongside. There's gluten-free fish and chips and vegan options too, which is rarer here than it should be. Food arrives quickly and the team are warm with walk-ins, though the chips can come under-seasoned and it's a busy tourist spot, so expect a lively room rather than a quiet one. Sticky toffee pudding is worth staying for.
