Set beside the water at Whisby, this is the kind of lunch stop where children can watch water-skiers practising while they wait for food — and the waiting doesn't tend to be long, with roasts and puddings arriving quickly even on busy Saturdays. Portions land generously: the kids' chicken nuggets come out huge, the lamb shank and turkey roasts are properly filling, and toasted sandwiches turn up with salad, coleslaw and crisps. There's a kids' menu, high chairs, vegan options and level access for a pram, plus plenty of outdoor tables by the lake (dogs welcome out there too). The team are warmly patient with families — one parent mentioned a birthday in passing and a wrapped box of chocolates appeared at the till. The menu is fairly simple, and the odd dish has arrived cool in the middle.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
