Big, easy-going and priced gently for what you get, this is the sort of pub where a family of five can spread out without anyone tutting. Free parking helps, there's a kids' menu and high chairs, and the staff are warm — plenty of chatter and patience with children and dogs alike (there's a doggie menu, which small children find hilarious). The mixed grill and the steak and ale pie with chips get proper raves, and the burgers and veggie chilli hold up too. Some of the outdoor tables sit right beside the river, which buys you twenty minutes of stone-throwing while you finish your drink. Worth knowing: it fills up, and one family waited over an hour for food on a busy day — book at weekends and order early if anyone's hungry. Toilets are on site; a riverside walk afterwards rounds it off nicely.
