A proper old-building carvery with real character — parents describe it as stepping back in time, in a good way — and the food is the draw: three meats plus smoked-on-site pork belly, homemade sausages, thick homemade gravy, well-done roast potatoes, sautéed cabbage with bacon and proper Yorkshire puddings. The main course is all-you-can-eat, and portions are generous enough that families regularly take dessert home in a box, which is handy when a child has run out of patience before pudding. Three courses for around £30 is genuinely good value. There's a kids' menu, high chairs, buggy access and free parking, though the car park is on the small side. Book well ahead for Sunday — a fortnight isn't unusual — and expect service to be warm but a little scattered at busy times.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
