Handy for a fill-up after a walk on the coast path or the dunes, this is a roomy, easy-going spot where families slot in without much fuss — plenty of seating, high chairs, level access for a pram and free parking outside. The kitchen does proper home cooking: the pies get the loudest praise (steak, and a venison one packed with meat under good suet pastry), the Solway burger is made fresh in the morning, and the chips are cut and cooked there rather than out of a freezer bag. Lasagne and Sunday roasts land well too, and portions feel like value for the money. Big group orders still come out hot and together, and the staff are consistently warm with children. There's a kids' menu, outdoor seating, and a games room upstairs. Walkers and dogs drift through, so it's sociable rather than silent.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
