Sat on the A6 near Matlock, this is the sort of stop that suits a family walk in the Peak District — free parking outside, buggy access, high chairs and a kids' menu, and a canopied outdoor area where children can watch the lorries and cars go past while you finish your coffee. Inside has a retro, antique feel and is warm and homely, with the staff going out of their way to look after people. Breakfasts are the draw: proper fresh ingredients, good bacon and sausages, around £8 for a five-piece with toast, and enough to keep you going for hours. The cakes and pastries deserve their reputation — the cornflake tart with custard gets specific praise — and there's a chicken and pesto flatbread one visitor called "out of this world". Vegan options too. The outdoor tables can be windy given the roadside spot.
