Wakefield's American-style smokehouse works well with children in tow — there's a playground right beside the outdoor tables, so you can actually finish a plate while they burn off energy. Inside is warm and roomy enough for a pram, with high chairs and a proper kids' menu that has real choice. Portions are enormous: the sharing platters defeat two adults, and the 16-hour smoked brisket and Oklahoma smash burger get the most praise, along with pulled pork tostadas and the frickles. Staff are cheerful and go out of their way, which helps on a wobbly day. Parking is free. Worth knowing: it isn't cheap — a family of three can easily pass £100 — and the buzzy, busy atmosphere means it's lively rather than quiet. One parent summed it up as a place that "just makes you happy".

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
