About Hearth

Set on the Heckfield Place estate, this is a farm-to-table kitchen where nearly everything is cooked over an open fire — and the tapas-style plates turn out to be quietly useful with children, since you can order a few things and share rather than commit anyone to a whole main. The lamb draws real praise, the bread is the kind people keep tearing at, and breakfast eggs get their own devoted following. There are high chairs, a kids' menu, buggy access, and lovely outdoor seating for when small people need to move. The service is warm rather than formal — one visitor found it "certainly not stuffy at all" — and the team have been known to walk guests round the grounds. Be straight with yourself on cost, though: it's expensive, and it leans special-occasion. Worth the drive out for a treat.
