Tucked into an old, nicely decorated building on the hill, this is a small bistro-style restaurant that manages the unusual trick of feeling special without feeling stiff. Buggy access and high chairs are sorted, there's a kids' menu, and the staff are warm and quick to accommodate — they've handled multiple allergies at one table, adapting dishes rather than shrugging. Portions are generous and the value is genuinely good for the quality; the steak, the fish and chips and the Sunday roast all get real praise, and desserts are the standout (a lemon and raspberry pannacotta in particular). Ask about the specials. It's not huge, so book ahead even midweek, and park in the Queen and Castle car park behind — far less faff than hunting for a space out front. One family calls it simply "our favourite restaurant".
