About a hundred yards from the beach, this is the sort of place you can duck into when the weather turns — one family sheltered from hail showers here over hot chocolates and found a proper welcome. It's bright and airy with seating upstairs and comfy tables outside, so there's room for a buggy, plus high chairs, a kids' menu, vegan options and free parking. The staff stay kind and patient even when it's heaving in summer, and dogs get bowls of ice water. Food is the real draw: ribs and peri peri chicken, crispy chips, fresh sea bass and plaice specials, and a generous lamb cawl at around £12.50. It gets very busy in peak season, and larger tables have sometimes waited for everyone's food to land together, so book ahead and go early with hungry children.

A little something creative for your next meal out. Filled with colouring, simple drawing prompts for cute animals, origami and conversation starters designed to bring more play, laughter and connection to the table. 3 free printable packs for toddlers, preschoolers and primary-aged children.
