Carved into Nottingham's sandstone cliff just down from Canning Circus, this 1860s pub has enough history in its bones — it was an air raid shelter in the war — to keep older children genuinely interested while you eat. Buggy access, high chairs and a kids' menu are all sorted, and the staff have a warm, unflustered way about them. Sunday lunch is the thing to come for: roast beef and lamb both cooked properly, crispy roast potatoes, generous portions, and puddings that people go misty about — chocolate brownie, cornflake tart with warm custard. It's cosy rather than cavernous, and it fills up, so book ahead at weekends. Live music turns up regularly, which can mean a livelier room than a tired toddler wants. Dogs are welcome too. One small gripe: the pigs in blankets side isn't worth the money.
