A riverside spot right on the Mill Pond, this one earns its keep on setting alone — punts drifting past, swans wandering about, cows across the water in the late afternoon. There's a lot of room, which matters with a pram: a conservatory, a big terrace, and a heated marquee that splits the difference on chilly evenings. Even when it's heaving, families tend to find a quieter corner, and the staff are warm with children. High chairs and a kids' menu are there. The steak and ale pie and Sunday roast get the most praise, along with the nachos and toasted sandwiches. Two honest caveats: on sunny weekends the kitchen slows right down, and parking across the road runs about £11 for two hours. Go early with hungry children.
